About
Danehill was the most successful sire of all time. He was the sire of 2008 runners, 1545 winners (76.9%), of whom 349 were stakes winners (17.4%).Of his stakes winners 89 were at Group 1/Grade 1 level. Trained by Jeremy Tree, Danehill started nine times during his racing career, for four wins and three placings. As a three-year-old, following a third place in the 2000 Guineas and a fourth place in the Irish equivalent, Danehill was switched to shorter distances and developed into a fine sprinter, winning the Cork and Orrery Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Haydock Sprint Cup. In 1990 Danehill was sold to a partnership of Coolmore Stud in Ireland and Arrowfield Stud in Australia, and commenced duty as a dual hemisphere shuttle stallion. He was to return to Australia ten more times, and also served one season at stud in Japan. In 1996 he became the sole property of Coolmore Stud. Danehill was leading sire in Australia nine times, twice in France and three times in Great Britain and Ireland. He has 114 sons and 56 grandsons at stud in Australia, ensuring that his bloodline will remain a mainstay of thoroughbred breeding. Danehill died as a result of a paddock accident in Ireland in May 2003.
