For over 130 years, through five generations, William Inglis & Son has been a leader of the Australian bloodstock industry.
In 1867, the Scotsman, William Inglis, and his partner established a business dealing in cattle and horses. The business became William Inglis and Son in 1884 when the founder took his son John into the partnership. In 1906 the firm leased premises at Newmarket and held its first yearling sale at the site. The premises were purchased in 1917, and through a continuous process of development and upgrading have become a world class sales venue.
The firm caters to every level of the bloodstock industry in Australasia. Newmarket hosts the Easter, Classic, and Sires' Produce sales, while Oaklands, the firm's Victorian base, stages the Premier and Autumn yearling sales. The Scone yearling sale in May is Australia's most successful country sale.
Champions of every vintage have paraded through the Inglis sale ring – Heroic, Amounis, Hall Mark, Flight, Evening Peal, Wenona Girl, Naturalism, Schillaci, Shogun Lodge, Universal Prince, Might and Power, to name just a few. Seventeen winners of the Golden Slipper, including leading sires Luskin Star, Rory's Jester, Marscay and Flying Spur have emerged from the sales.
The Inglis family was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2003.
