Applications are open for the 2025 Rider Development Squad (RDS), which serves as the official pathway for budding hoops aiming to join the Apprentice Jockey Training Program (AJTP).
The closing date for applications to be submitted is Wednesday, 29 January 2025, with the first of five training sessions due to take place one week later on Wednesday, 7 February.
Trackwork riders of all abilities are encouraged to apply for the RDS, which is designed to improve their overall performance and technique by providing education in a wide range of areas including nutrition, strength and conditioning, and general riding skills.
Membership of the program, which aims to foster personal and professional growth, is a pre-requisite for any prospective applicants for the 2026 AJTP.
Next year’s intake will aim to replicate the success of this year’s RDS, which saw 49 aspiring riders receive comprehensive training designed to upskill them and open further career opportunities in the industry.
The training blocks featured sessions on the mechanical horse and jumpout reviews administered by RV’s Apprentice Jockey Coaches, Darren Gauci and Alf Matthews.
By focusing on skill enhancement and education, the program not only benefits the participants but also strengthens the wider industry’s workforce, which contributes to its ongoing success and sustainability.
From the 2024 cohort, 20 riders have submitted an application to join the 2025 AJTP intake, with an announcement due soon on the successful candidates.
In a change to the structure, next year will see the creation of an Apprentice Jockey Squad (AJS) which will serve as a pre-apprenticeship program and provide a bridge for any aspiring jockeys seeking to progress to the AJTP.
The AJS will provide its members with access to a network of AJTP resources, including expert coaches, dietitians, strength and conditioning specialists and physiotherapists from the Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS). These resources are designed to support their growth and development, ensuring the riders are well-prepared for the physical and mental demands of pursuing a career in the saddle.
Once an AJS members has demonstrated the readiness and skill levels required to take the next step, they can officially transition to the AJTP and take part in official trials, before eventually advancing to race riding.
The AJS concept was formed following consultation with industry stakeholder groups. The enhanced model should ensure a more structured and supportive pathway, gradually enabling riders to build the skills, resilience and confidence required to excel as apprentice jockeys.
By refining the transition process and offering robust support systems, the new structure reinforces RV’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of jockey talent.
Applications to the 2025 RDS can be made by emailing ajtp@racingvictoria.net.au with your full name and email address before Wednesday, 29th January 2025.
