The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) has strengthened its relationship with Living Legends, the international home for retired champion horses.
The VRC’s May Raceday on Saturday 5 May 2018 at Flemington will be renamed Living Legends Raceday, as part of a new agreement.
The day will celebrate not only the retired champions who reside at Living Legends but all retired racehorses in general, ahead of National Hall of Fame Raceday on Saturday 19 May next year.
The agreement will also see two Living Legends horses parade throughout the day at each Flemington raceday including all Group 1 meetings outside of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, starting on National Jockey Celebration Raceday on Saturday 5 August 2017.
Living Legends have appeared at many past Flemington racedays, including February’s Black Caviar, The Great Horse Raceday which saw ten legends take part in a Parade of Champions, while the horses also frequently participate in the Club’s media events.
VRC Interim Chief Executive Neil Wilson said the Club is proud to feature Living Legends at its upcoming race meetings.
“Racegoers will get a thrill out of seeing these greats of the turf parade in the Mounting Yard at more than twenty Flemington racedays throughout the year.
“Living Legends does outstanding work in caring for these horses during their well-deserved retirement, and we look forward to welcoming much loved Emirates Melbourne Cup winners and other former stars of the track back to Flemington.”
Living Legends CEO Dr Andrew Clarke said the horses at Woodlands Homestead in Greenvale enjoy revisiting the site of some of their greatest victories.
“Might and Power, Brew, Efficient and Rogan Josh are Emirates Melbourne Cup winners, while Apache Cat, Zipping and Paris Lane are among our horses to record group one wins at Flemington.
“It’s wonderful they can come back to Flemington and connect with fans, young and old.”
VRC Members can also support Living Legends through the Racing Rewards program. Members can redeem their points for cash donations to the not-for-profit organisation or they can redeem points for a Living Legends Tour experience.
Living Legends was established in 2006 to bring retired champion racehorses back to the public. It also promotes and supports research into horse health and welfare, and educates people about horse health and ownership. Living Legends is a charitable organisation which relies on private and corporate donations to fund its work.
