Health & Safety Commitment

Health and safety is a key driver to ensure racing is for all and forms a key component of our values as captured in RV’s ‘Strategic Framework’.

Employers involved in thoroughbred horseracing in Victoria – including jockeys and trainers - have a legal responsibility to ensure a safe workplace. The core principles set out below complement and reinforce, but do not replace, those obligations, and we expect all racing participants to demonstrate a genuine commitment to them.

Are you prepared to be a front runner in health and safety?

  • In our industry, all participants must promote respectful and positive behaviours and values to sustain and advance horse racing’s place in Victoria’s and Australia’s social fabric.

  • None of those values is more important than the health, safety, and wellbeing of our people, and we expect all participants to embrace the four Victorian Racing core principles of health & safety and demonstrate their commitment to health and safety by showing the following behaviours:

  • Show respect for people with different ideas and views and demonstrate your health and safety commitment through action and leadership;

  • Think about health and safety in everything you do at work, be aware of your health & safety obligations, always look for opportunities to improve, and share your learnings with others; and

  • Regularly engage in health & safety matters, report and discuss unsafe behaviours, issues and incidents, and recognise positive health & safety behaviours.

Our Core Principles

  • Respect: consider others in your day to day actions

  • Leadership: encourage everyone to be a leader in health and safety

  • Growth: never stop seeking new ways to improve safety. Strive to ensure a safe workplace and a strong safety culture

  • Courage: create positive safety outcomes by acknowledging unsafe and inappropriate behaviours
